Cake Decorating – How to Make a Rosebud

One of the staples of cake decorating is knowing how to make a rosebud with icing.  I find it easier to watch how to make something like this rather than read about.  Therefore, I have a short video you can watch that teaches you how to create your own roses to be used in your own cakes.

Tools Needed:

  • Flower nail (or rose nail)
  • Icing spatula (or toothpick)
  • Pastry bag and tip

Like Kate said, the title is “How to Make a Rosebud. I am already an accomplished cake decorator, however I am out of practice and need a refresher on rosebuds.

Also, just f.y.i., Wilton decorating is not really the best. You can make a much nicer and more beautiful rose by not following a rigid formula. Just let it flow and put the petals wherever they wish to be, whatever number of petals fit naturally. Like my boss taught me when I was first hired to do cakes, just keep going until it looks good, then stop.
