Gum Paste Rose
A rose bud can be a beautiful decoration on any cake or cupcake adding color and creativity to birthday, wedding or anniversary cakes.
Making a rose bud isn’t as hard as you may think. With tools available on the internet or from craft stores, you are able to purchase all different stencils to use with gum past.
How To Create Your Gum Paste Rose
To start make a cone out of gum paste and attach to short thin green stick. Allow this to dry, once hard this will become the base of your flower.
You will need crafting foam to support your petals, a petal pad to cut your petals, a roller and a ball tool. Petal cutters can be purchased online or from any cake store.
Roll out your gumpaste quite thin, to a point where you can start seeing through it. Place your cutter over the paste and push down firmly. The stencil will cut you five petals joined together in the centre making it an easy choice rather than hand cutting each petal individually.
Lift your cutter and remove excess gum paste around your petals. Place your five petals on the petal pad and using the large end of your ball tool roll around the edges of each petal. For best results roll half on the petal and half on the pad, this will soften the edges and start them curling slightly.
Turning over your petals use your ball tool and push down and pull from the top side of each petal to the centre, this will give them a cupping effect.
Poke a hole in the centre and place on the crafting foam, which should also have a hole in the centre. Push your green stalk through until your cone is touching your petals.
Now the exciting part starts, assembling your rose bud. Add egg white to your first petal. Wipe it on with a small paint bush approximately two thirds of the way up the petal. Lift the petal towards the cone and wrap it around the cone, making sure the edges stick; this will start the centre of your rose bud.
Put some egg white on the two gum paste petals opposite your first petal, and pull them up towards the cone and wrap them around carefully. Once they are stuck down, you can egg white your last two petals and bring them up, covering any seams.
Once they are all stuck on, pull your gum paste rose bud free of the crafting foam. Pinch along the bottom and gentle push the sides to ensure that everything is sticking together properly. Leave to dry and then decorate your cake with this beautiful rose bud.
